If ye be aware of a certain
truth, if ye possess a jewel, of which others are deprived, share it with them
in a language of utmost kindliness and good-will.

愛とは、なんとすばらしい力でしょう。それは、あらゆる活力の中で最もすばらしい、最も偉大なる力です。
What a power is love!
It is the most wonderful, the greatest of all living powers.

人間世界でもっとも偉大な王であり、主権者なるものは、
愛です。
もし愛が無くなれば、引き合う力が消え、
人の心の情がこわれ、
人間生活の諸々が消えるのです。
In the world of
humanity the greatest king and sovereign is love. If love were extinguished,
the power of attraction dispelled,
the affinity of human
hearts destroyed, the phenomena of human life would disappear.

愛は生命なきものに命を与え、冷たい心に炎を灯し、絶望している人に希望を与え、悲嘆にくれた人の心に喜びをもたらすものです。
Love gives life to
the lifeless. Love lights a flame in the heart that is cold. Love brings hope
to the hopeless and gladdens the hearts of the sorrowful.

人間の進歩と栄光を達成する最高の手段、世界の啓発と救済を実現する究極の媒体、
それは人類間の愛と親睦と和合であることは確かである。
It is certain that
the greatest of instrumentalities for achieving the advancement and the glory
of man,
the supreme agency
for the enlightenment and the redemption of the world, is love and fellowship
and unity among all the members of the human race.

存在の世界で、実に、愛の力ほど偉大な力は他にありません。心が愛の炎で燃えたっているとき、人はすべてを、自分の命さえも喜んで犠牲にします。福音書には神は愛なりとあります。
In the world of
existence there is indeed no greater power than the power of love. When the
heart of man is aglow with the flame of love,
he is ready to
sacrifice all—even his life. In the Gospel it is said God is love.

愛は全ての現象の存在の原因であり、
愛の欠如は崩壊と不存在の原因であることを我は断言します。
愛は神が意識的に与え給うた賜物であり、
全ての現象の結合の絆です。
We declare that love
is the cause of the existence of all phenomena and that the absence of love is
the cause of disintegration or nonexistence.
Love is the conscious
bestowal of God, the bond of affiliation in all phenomena.

愛は神の賜物すべての源です。
愛が人の心を占めるまで
他のいかなる聖なる恩恵も人の心に
顕され得ないのです。
Love is the source of
all the bestowals of God. Until love takes possession of the heart, no other
divine bounty can be revealed in it.

人間の究極の目標は神のお喜びを勝ち取ることである。そのために、愛と友情は絶対的に必要である。人は結束しなければならない。お互いに愛し合わなければならない。互いに称賛し合わなくてはならない。すべての人を褒め称えなくてはならない。こうして、人々の間に疎外を招いた不和や憎しみを取り除かなくてはならない。
Love and fellowship
are absolutely needful to win the good-pleasure of God which is the goal of all
human attainment
. We must be united.
We must love each other. We must ever praise each other.
We must bestow
commendation upon all people, thus removing the discord and hatred which have
caused alienation amongst men.

愛には四種類あります。第一は、神から人間に注がれる愛です。それは、尽きない恩寵と聖なる輝き、天上の光明から成り立っています。この愛を通して存在の世界は生命を受けています。この愛を通して人間は肉体的生存を与えられ、そして遂に、「聖霊」の息吹を通して、すなわちこの同じ愛を通して永遠の生命を受け、「生ける神」の面影となるのです。この愛こそ、創造の世界のあらゆる愛の根源なのです。
There are four kinds
of love. The first is the love that flows from God to man; it consists of the
inexhaustible graces,
the Divine effulgence
and heavenly illumination. Through this love the world of being receives life.
Through this love man
is endowed with physical existence, until, through the breath of the Holy
Spirit—this same love—
he receives eternal
life and becomes the image of the Living God. This love is the origin of all
the love in the world of creation.

第二は、人間が神へ捧げる愛です。これが信仰であり、神へ引きつけられ、燃え立ち、進化し、神の王国へ入り、神の恩恵を享受し、
神の王国の光を受けることです。この愛はあらゆる博愛の根源であり、人びとの心に「真理の太陽」の光を反映させるものです。
The second is the
love that flows from man to God. This is faith, attraction to the Divine, enkindlement, progress,
entrance into the
Kingdom of God, receiving the Bounties of God, illumination with the lights of
the Kingdom.
This love is the
origin of all philanthropy; this love causes the hearts of men to reflect the
rays of the Sun of Reality.

第三は、神「ご自身」、あるいはその「本性」に対する神の愛です。これは、神の美の変容であり、「神の創造」の鏡に映る神ご自身の反映です。
これが愛の真髄であり、「古来の愛」、「永遠の愛」です。この愛の一条の光で、他のすべての愛は存在するのです。
The third is the love
of God towards the Self or Identity of God. This is the transfiguration of His
Beauty,
the reflection of Himself in the mirror
of His Creation.
This is the reality of love, the Ancient
Love, the Eternal Love. Through one ray of this Love all other love exists.

第四は、人間の人間に対する愛です。信者たちの間にある愛は、精神の和という理想によって促されます。
この愛は神を知ることによって達成されます。そうすれば、人々は「神の愛」が心に反映されるのを見るでしょう。
各々が相手の魂に反映された「神の美」を見出し、この類似点がある故に、互いに愛において引かれ合うのです。この愛が全人類を一つの海の波、一つの天の星、一本の木の果実とします。
この愛が真の調和を実現させ、真の和合の基礎をもたらすのです。
The fourth is the
love of man for man. The love which exists between the hearts of believers is
prompted by the ideal of the unity of spirits.
This love is attained
through the knowledge of God, so that men see the Divine Love reflected in the
heart.
Each sees in the
other the Beauty of God reflected in the soul, and finding this point of
similarity, they are attracted to one another in love.
This love will make
all men the waves of one sea, this love will make them all the stars of one
heaven and the fruits of one tree.
This love will bring
the realization of true accord, the foundation of real unity.

神は愛なり。神は友愛、純粋性、神聖さと忍耐を
求める。これらは神性の属性である。
God is love; God seeketh fellowship, purity, sanctity and long-suffering;
these are the attributes of divinity.

神の愛がなければ、人の心は啓発されないでしょうょう。
神の愛がなければ、神の王国への道は開かれないでしょうょう。
神の愛がなければ、聖典も啓示されることはなかったでしょう。
神の愛がなければ、神の預言者たちもこの世に送り込まれることはなかったでしょう。
これらすべての賜物の基盤は神の愛です。
それ故、人類世界には神の愛より偉大な力は存在しないのです。
Were it not for the
love of God, the hearts would not be illumined. Were it not for the love of
God, the pathway of the Kingdom would not be opened.
Were it not for the
love of God, the Holy Books would not have been revealed.
Were it not for the
love of God, the divine Prophets would not have been sent to the world.
The foundation of all these bestowals is
the love of God. Therefore, in the human world there is no greater power than
the love of God.

真の愛は神とその僕の間に存在する愛、聖なる魂をひとつに結ぶ愛です。
これこそ精神世界の愛であり、肉体や有機体の愛とは異なるのです。
Real love is the love
which exists between God and His servants, the love which binds together holy
souls.
This is the love of the spiritual world,
not the love of physical bodies and organisms.

それ故、心に愛をつくり出し、その心が光を放ち、輝くよう努力しなさい。
その愛が輝く時、それは他の人の心に浸透するでしょう。
神の愛が確立される時、他のすべてが実現するでしょう。
Strive, therefore, to
create love in the hearts in order that they may become glowing and radiant.
When that love is
shining, it will permeate other hearts…
When the love of God
is established, everything else will be realized.

信仰の最初の印は愛です。聖なる神の顕示者のメッセージは愛です。
創造の現象は愛に基づいています。この世の輝きは愛によるものです。
世界の安寧と幸福は愛に依存するのです。
The first sign of
faith is love. The message of the holy, divine Manifestations is love; the
phenomena of creation are based upon love;
the radiance of world
is due to love; the well-being and happiness of the world depend upon it.

誰の心も傷つけないよう注意しましょう。陰口を言わないよう、
また、神の僕と疎遠にならぬように注意しましょう。
すべての神の僕を自分の家族や親戚と考えましょう。
絶望している者を幸せにするよう、すべての努力を傾けましょう。
空腹な者には食物を与え、貧者には衣類を与え、卑しい者に栄光を与えましょう。
助けを必要とする者には援助を惜しまず、同胞にやさしくしましょう。
そうすれば、神はお喜びになるでしょう。
Beware lest ye offend
any heart, lest ye speak against anyone in his absence, lest ye estrange
yourselves from the servants of God.
You must consider all His servants as
your own family and relations.
Direct your whole
effort toward the happiness of those who are despondent, bestow food upon the
hungry, clothe the needy, and glorify the humble.
Be a helper to every
helpless one, and manifest kindness to your fellow creatures in order that ye
may attain the good pleasure of God.

全人類に対し、完全な愛と愛情を示さなければなりません。
他人よりも自分が上だと思うことなく、
全ての人を自分と平等と見なし、唯一の神の僕として見なさなければなりません。
神は全ての人にあわれみ深いことを知りなさい。したがって、心の底から全てを愛し、すべての信仰ある人を自分よりも優先し、
全ての人種への愛で心を満たし、すべての国の人に親切でありなさい。
You must manifest
complete love and affection toward all mankind.
Do not exalt
yourselves above others, but consider all as your equals, recognizing them as
the servants of one God.
Know that God is
compassionate toward all; therefore, love all from the depths of your hearts,
prefer all religionists before yourselves, be filled with love for every race,
and be kind toward the people of all nationalities.

愛への招き手であれ。人類に親切でやさしくあれ。
世界の全ての人に関心を持ち、調和を望み、友情と正直を求めよ。
あらゆる傷を癒し、あらゆる病人に回復をもたらす者であれ。人々の間の調和の源であれ。
導きの言葉を唱え、神に祈り、人を導くために立ち上がれ。
舌には神の愛を語らせ、顔を神の愛で輝かせよ。
神の愛の印となり、神のご好意の旗印となるまで、一瞬たりとも休むことなく、
休息の息を吸うことなかれ。
Be a caller to love;
kind to the human race; gentle with humanity; interested in all the people of
the world; wish for harmony and seek friendship and honesty.
Be a healing for
every wound, a remedy for every sick, a source of harmony among the people;
chant the verses of guidance;
pray to God; arise for the guidance of
the people; let thy tongue explain and thy face illumine with the glowing of
the love of God.
Rest not a moment and
breathe not a breath of repose until thou becomest a
sign of God’s love and a banner of God’s favour.

絶望しないでください。精進しましょう。
誠実と愛は憎悪の念を征服するでしょう。
不可能と思われた多くのことがどれだけ今日、現実のことになっているでしょう！
「世界の光」にしっかりと面を向けることです。
すべての人たちに愛を示しましょう。
「愛は人間の心の中にある聖霊の息吹です」。
Do not despair! Work
steadily! Sincerity and love will conquer hate.
How many seemingly
impossible events are coming to pass these days! Set your faces towards the
Light of the World.
Show love to all;
‘Love is the breath of the Holy Spirit in the heart of Man.’

あなたは表面だけでなく、誠実に心からやさしくなければならない。
神に愛される者は一人一人が皆、次のことに最大の注意を払うべきである。
すなわち、人に対しては主の慈悲となり、恵みとなること、出会う全ての人に何かの善を施し、役に立つようにすること。
あらゆる人の性格を改善し、人々の心を再教育せよ。
そうすれば、神の導きの光が輝き出で、神の祝福が全人類を包むであろう。
愛はそれがどこに宿ろうとも光であり、憎しみはそれがどこに巣を作ろうと闇であるのだから。
Be ye sincerely kind,
not in appearance only. Let each one of God’s loved ones centre
his attention on this:
to be the Lord’s
mercy to man; to be the Lord’s grace.
Let him do some good to every person
whose path he crosseth, and be of some benefit to
him.
Let him improve the character of each and
all, and reorient the minds of men. In this way,
the light of divine
guidance will shine forth, and the blessings of God will cradle all mankind:
for love is light, no
matter in what abode it dwelleth; and hate is darkness, no matter where it may
make its nest.

もし私が皆さんを愛していれば、私の愛について話し続ける必要はありません。
言葉なしでも、皆さんはわかるでしょう。
If I love you, I need
not continually speak of my love—you will know without any words.

愛は平和より偉大です。なぜなら、平和は愛の上に築かれるからです。
愛は平和が目標とする究極点であり、平和は愛から生じる結果です。
愛が達成されない限り、平和は存在しません…神からの愛が基盤なのです。
この愛は、全ての人間の達成目標であり、天の輝きであり、人間の光なのです。
Love is greater than
peace, for peace is founded upon love.
Love is the objective
point of peace, and peace is an outcome of love.
Until love is
attained, peace cannot be…The love which is from God is the fundamental.
This love is the
object of all human attainment, the radiance of heaven, the light of man.

愛は「神の聖なる摂理」の秘訣であり、
すべてに慈悲深き御方の顕現であり、
精神的なほとばしりの源泉であることを、しかと知りなさい。
Know thou of a
certainty that Love is the secret of God’s holy Dispensation,
the manifestation of
the All-Merciful, the fountain of spiritual outpourings.

愛は天のやさしい光、人間の魂に生気を与える「聖霊」の永遠の息吹である。
Love is Heaven’
kindly light, the Holy Spirit’s eternal breath that vivifieth
the human soul.

愛は人間に対する神の啓示の根拠であり、
聖なる創造に沿って、諸物の実在に内在する、不可欠の絆である。
Love is the cause of
God’s revelation unto man, the vital bond inherent,
in accordance with
the divine creation, in the realities of things.

愛はこの世と次の世の両方で、真の幸福を保証する唯一の手段である。
Love is the one means
that ensureth true felicity both in this world and
the next.

愛は暗闇の中を導く「光」、神を人と結びつける生きた絆であり、
それは、全ての啓発された魂の進歩を保証する。
Love is the Light
that guideth in darkness, the living link that uniteth God with man,
that assureth the progress of every illumined soul.

愛はこの強大で神々しい周期を支配する、最も偉大な法則であり、
この物質世界の様々な要素をつなぐ、独特の力であり、
天の領域の天体の動きを方向づける、最高の磁力である。
Love is the most
great law that ruleth this mighty and heavenly cycle,
the unique power that bindeth
together the divers elements of this material world,
the supreme magnetic
force that directeth the movements of the spheres in
the celestial realms.

愛は宇宙に潜在する神秘を、無限で尽きることのない力で解き明かすものである。
Love revealeth with unfailing and limitless power the mysteries
latent in the universe.

愛は、人類の飾られた身体への命の精神であり、
滅ぶべき世界に真の文明を打ち建てるものであり、
あらゆる志高き人種と国の上に、不滅の栄光を放つものである。
Love is the spirit of
life unto the adorned body of mankind, the establisher of true civilization in
this mortal world,
and the shedder of
imperishable glory upon every high-aiming race and nation.
アブドル・バハ（1844−1921）
アブドル・バハは、信奉者には「師」として知られ、この時代最も尊敬された精神的人物の一人です。彼の人生と教えは、今日、世界中の何百万もの人々の霊感の源泉となっています。彼は、バハイ信教の創始者バハオラの長子ですが、バハオラは、全ての民族の和合と調和が確立され、全ての宗教の本質的一体性が認められる時代に入ろうとしていると説きました。

ABDU'L-BAHA
(1844-1921)
'Abdu'l-Bahá, known to his followers as 'The
Master,' is one of the most revered spiritual figures of our time. His life and
teachings are today a source of inspiration to millions of people throughout
the world. 'Abdu'l-Bahá was the eldest son of
Baha'u'llah, founder of the Baha'i Faith, who taught that the world is entering
an age when the unity and harmony of all peoples will be established and the
essential oneness of all religions will become recognised.
'Abdu'l-Bahá's life was dedicated to the service
of humanity and the promotion of his father's great mission. He is regarded as
the perfect exemplar of the noble virtues and spiritual qualities which, Baha'u'llah
taught, it is our purpose in life to acquire. When still a young child of
tender years he was condemned, with his father, to a lifetime of bitter
persecution, exile and imprisonment by the religious and civil authorities of
his day. Despite the cruelty and suffering inflicted upon him, 'Abdu'l-Bahá's great love and compassion for the downtrodden
and oppressed earned him the title 'Father of the Poor' and his wisdom and
reputation drew countless pilgrims from four continents to the prison city of Akka in the Holy Land, where he was incarcerated.
Upon his release from captivity in 1908, and despite his advanced years
and failing health, 'Abdu'l-Bahá embarked on a series
of epic journeys to spread the Baha'i teachings in the West. His message of
hope and vision of universal peace challenges the traditional prejudices and
rivalries of nation, race, class and religion, and transcends the barriers of time
and place, encouraging its all to walk the spiritual
path with practical feet.
